Dr. Henry Azzam

Advisory Member

Dr. Azzam is a Senior Lecturer of Finance and is the director of the Masters in Finance Program at Olayan School of Business, American University of Beirut. Dr. Azzam was the Chairman and CEO of Social Security Investment Fund (SSIF) of Jordan for the period from August 2012 to August 2013. The Fund has a diversified investment portfolio worth close to USD 9 billion of stocks, bonds, private equity, and direct investments.

Prior to the SSIF, Dr. Azzam was Deutsche Bank’s Chairman and CEO for the MENA region during the period from January 2007 to December 2012. Before that he was the CEO of Amwal Invest, an investment bank he founded in Amman in 2005 and guided it during its first two years of operations. During 2002-2007, he served as the Chairman of Dubai International Financial Exchange, (currently Nasdaq Dubai), Chairman of MobileCom, (the second largest mobile phone operator in Jordan) and Chairman of Rubicon, Amman – Jordan.

Before establishing Amwal Invest, Dr. Azzam was the CEO of Jordinvest (2001-2004), Managing Director of Middle East Capital Group, Amman (1998-2001), AGM and Chief Economist of the Saudi National Commercial Bank, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1990-1998) and Vice President and Chief Economist of Gulf International Bank, Bahrain (1983-1990). Before that he worked with the Arab Fund in Kuwait and taught Economics at the American University of Beirut.

Dr. Azzam is currently a board member of Byblos Bank, Beirut, Rasmala Investment Bank, Dubai and Arab Jordan Investment Bank, Amman. Previously he served as a board member of Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ), Nuqul Group, Aramex, Majid Al Furtaim Trust (MAFT) – Dubai, Arabtec – Dubai, and Al Ahli Bank, Amman. He was also a member of the International Advisory Board of the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul).

Education / Others

Dr. Azzam holds a B.A. and M.A. from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. in Financial Economics from University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has five books published in the UK and the US, the last one “The Emerging Middle East Financial Markets”, published in 2015 by AuthorHouse in the US.

Ghanem Al Ghunaiman is a seasoned investment professional currently serving as the Deputy Director General of Investment at Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, responsible for the investment allocation strategy and capital deployment for the the Fund’s investment activities globally. He is one of the pioneers in driving the investment policy for the Kuwait Fund who have had an important role in risk diversification and return enhancement for the Fund’s portfolio.

He currently serves as a non-executive and independent director at Al Jazeera Steel Products Company in Oman and an Independent Director at AVIVO Group in Dubai, one of the region’s leading healthcare groups. Mr. Al Ghunaiman is also a board member at Vision Al Khair GCC Fund, which is a Shariah-Compliant open-ended Fund established in the Sultanate of Oman.

Ghanem holds a Bachelor Degree in Accounting and completed a 2-year Post-Graduate Degree in International Business with an experience of 30 years in the field of securities portfolio, alternative investments, management of equity funds, strategic planning, asset management and allocation.

Noora Hamid has over 10 years of experience in financial instrument trading both locally & Internationally. She co-founded and managed an AED80 million company in Abu Dhabi, which managed portfolios of more than 1,000s of HNWIs in instrument trading.

She is currently a board member at Al Bashayer Investment Company. She was also voted as one of the strongest 100 Arab women in the world by Arabian business magazine in 2011. Noora is registered as a Director with CIMA pursuant to the DRLL.

Noora holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Decision Science & MIS from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Rawas is the Chief Executive Officer of Tasneea Oil & Gas Technology Group. Prior to his current post, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Oman Telecommunications Company (OmanTel) and earlier was the Managing Director of Oman Mobile Telecommunications Company (Oman Mobile). Before his joining the Telecom Sector, Dr. Rawas served in various academic and leadership positions at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) the flagship university in Oman. His last assignment was the Dean of Educational Services. Earlier to that he was the Director of the Center for Information System where he led the transformation of the role of ICT in the university. Dr. Amer Al Rawas is the current Chairman of MELA (Middle East Leadership Academy), a non-government leadership community serving the whole of Middle East providing leadership, training, networking, and inspiring the young leaders across the Middle East. Dr. Rawas is still serving in various educational and technological policy forums in the Sultanate and the region, including the Chairman of Middle East Leadership Academy, Chairman of Oman Society for Petroleum Services, Member of the Education Council and Member of Oman Academic Accreditation Authority.

Dr. Rawas’ previous achievements include:

  • 2015 : Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organization (Beyond Borders) Within Star Business Awards.
  • 2014: Recognized as the best transformation leader in by Alam al Iqtisad Wa Al Aamal (AIWA) magazine for the year 2013.
  • 2013: Awarded as the Best CEO Award in Telecom Sector and Supporter of the Labour Development Process in the Sultanate Award, Muscat.
  • 2012: Winner of the Prize of Asian Business Leadership Award for leading a sustainable and holistic growth at Omantel. This is a continental prize for Asia and was awarded in the ABLF ceremony in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • 2012: Won the HR Focused CEO Award of the 4th GCC HR Excellence Awards.
  • 2008: Won the NTI BizPro Business Leader of the Year Award.
  • 1990: Winner of the Redifusion Simulation Ltd. Prize for the Best Software Engineer Graduation Project at Brighton University.
Education / Others

Dr. Rawas holds a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from the Sussex University, UK, 1997. Although his area of specialization is Software Engineering, his research has expended in scope to cover the role of ICT in Economic Development, Socioeconomic and Demographic Drivers for Economic Growth.

Mr. Suresh Kumar is the founder & Chairman of Tricolour Values Group, a boutique private equity and M&A advisory firm focused on SME companies. Prior to his current role, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates NBD Group, where he spent 25 years in various senior leadership positions. He has also established Emirates Merchant Bank Limited and Emirates Financial Services. He is on the Board of several companies including ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, IDBI Federal Life Insurance Co Ltd and Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company, and is the Non-Executive Chairman Federal Bank Limited. Mr. Kumar was also the Founder of the Indian Business & Professional Council and has been the recipient of several accolades, including the “Hind Rattan” (Jewel of India) award on the 25th of January 2012.

Mr. Suresh Kumar has graduated from the University of Bombay with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in 1971. He also completed post-graduate programs conducted jointly by the Stanford University and the London School of Business as well as an Advanced Management Program at the Columbia Business School.
